Dirt

Bare Earth for Paths and Open Ground

Bare dirt does two jobs. On its own, it covers country paths, farm tracks, building sites and battlefields. As a blend layer, it joins other surfaces where terrain materials give way to soil or road materials run out at the verge.

Picking a resolution

You get a ZIP at the size you choose. When dirt is blended in as a patchy layer over another surface, a small size is usually enough, since most of it is hidden. Open ground stretching away from a low camera calls for the largest.

How to make dirt ground look real

Check scale against a boot print, about 30 centimeters long: clods and stones should look right beside it.
Break the edge where dirt meets grass or rock with a noisy mask, never a clean line.
Scatter real stones and twigs near the camera; a flat texture alone looks painted on at that distance.
When vehicles cross it, kick up dust and smoke VFX behind the wheels, and use dirt textures for flat 2D work.
