How to make 3D characters believable

Give skin some subsurface scattering (the Subsurface Weight on Blender's Principled BSDF), so ears and fingers glow slightly when backlit.
Add creases and grime where clothes bend and rub, at knees, elbows and cuffs; our fabric materials help in close-ups.
Aim each character's head and eyes at something in the scene, so background figures don't stare into empty space.
For outbreak scenes, stage the hazmat and zombie-textured figures among the wrecks in our apocalypse 3D models.
